15 Brilliant Ways to Save Money at Home

There are so many ways you can save money at home. Years ago, staying at home is a huge money saver but today, not anymore. eBay will be knocking on your phone screen telling you to buy the newest iPhone SE and you’ll buy it because your friend has it.

Here are brilliant hacks on how to save money at home.

Make Snacks, Don’t Buy Them

When you are stuck at home surfing, countless advertisements of your favorite foods are all over the internet. Resist the temptation bud. Try to cook what’s at home.

There are countless creative recipes on Youtube you can follow to make your favorite snacks. Enjoy your favorite snack without spending a penny.

Drop Your Addictions

Did you know that a pack of cigarettes a day sets you back $188 per month or $2,292 per year? Uh-huh, that’s a lot of money. With that you could have already started an emergency fund!

Consider making a change in your lifestyle for a change in your financial life! It’s a domino effect.

Try Generic

Some people say they’d rather buy branded than generic because they are more effective and tastier. Ooops! Not necessarily. If you buy a branded product worth $50 and it tastes similar to the $20 generic product, then I don’t see a reason why you shouldn’t pick the generic.

As for me, I’ll go for generic unless I have a very good reason I shouldn’t.

Air Dry Clothes

The sun is not just there for you to get a tan. It’s there to help you air dry your clothes too. Dry your clothes under the sun. You save electricity money and at the same time get the “sunshine vitamin”. Hitting two birds with one stone.

Get Back to Cleaning Basics

Learning how to save money at home simply means going basic. When I clean our loo, I mix some baking soda with vinegar. This is what I use to eliminate the odor and stains.

Try it. It’s an old practice but it works. You can also try other DIY cleaning materials. It’s all available on the internet.

Repair Small Things ASAP

Waiting for a major repair at your home will drain your bank account. Act fast! When you see a leak in the bathroom faucet, make sure to do something about it.

If you really want to save money, you can try repairing stuff on your own but make sure you’re not going to make it worse.

Reduce Unused Expenses

I have a friend (let’s call him Charity) who enrolled for a 3 month gym training and  just attended the first day then quit. He still pays for the monthly subscription because he thinks maybe one day” he’ll feel interested in going again”.

Don’t be like Charity. If you have subscriptions you are not using, cut it off. If you are paying for cable but doesn’t really watch the TV, what the heck are you waiting for? End it now.

Track Your Expenses

I find it funny when my partner asks me where all his money went. Like a few hours ago he just told me we’re still on budget but upon arriving home he tells me 1000 bucks has just evaporated.

I will share a lifehack so this wouldn’t have to happen to you. Try using envelopes and label them with all the expenses you pay every month (Rent, Groceries, Dog, Internet, Utilities, Personal, Savings)

Put the money in the envelope and put it in a safe place. In that way you wouldn’t have any opportunity to spend your money on something unimportant.

Use One Card

Sure others would suggest you have another to make sure you at least have an emergency fund. But this is something more. You should search for the best credit card or debit card that has the best rewards as well as cashback and use it for all your monthly bills. Like utilities and cellphones and cable television. Being able to use and maintain the balance grants you rewards as well as keeps your credit score in the green.

You can exploit the rewards as well since you are generally losing nothing when you are using credit cards but pay the balance monthly.

Get Paid to Recycle

I always wondered why my family hoarded bottles, papers at the back of our house. Until one day, my uncle took me with him to sell all the bottles and papers at a junk shop. That time did I only realize that people are getting paid for used materials.

It’s not too late to get paid for recycled material. Look for the nearest junk shop and sell your recycled materials. It’s not much but it’s still money.

Online Payments

Applying for online payments not only saves you money and resources. It also saves you time. Having an automatic payment will also grant you a considerable discount so ask your vendors as well as service providers if they have discounts for paperless statements as well as automatic online payments.

This also goes hand in hand with having one card since this grants you the ability to pay all your bills with a single bank transfer.

Do It Yourself

Before you spend so much money on something, think about doing it yourself! If you’re not into crafts, try learning it online or ask someone to teach you.

Allowances

When we talk about allowances, this does not mean treating yourself every month. This means that while you only have one card to rule them all, you should give yourself and your budget some space to breathe. This includes being able to determine how much you will be spending in the current week. You should always have cash during emergencies, and you should be committed to its use.

Using running expenses gives you a general idea of your spending habits and helps you rehabilitate it.

Debt

Debt, everybody has them. But this should never hinder you from making the right choices. You should go above and beyond to put these debts behind you rather than running away from them.

Make sure that your company transfers a portion of your wages to pay for your mortgage. This takes away the burden of uncertainty as well as improves your credit for when you need to borrow again.

Applications For Your Phone

In today’s time and age, technology, as well as the internet, have an integral role to play in every person’s life. You should also rely on them when it comes to your daily budgeting as well as banking.

There are a lot of apps that provide you with tips and tools in tackling financial matters from a simple note pad to a money budget calculator. You can find an app that can answer your needs.

There are other ways on how to save money at home. Sometimes you just have to figure out what works for you.
