How to Make a Killer Bio: 6 Quick & Easy Tips

Have you ever tried checking a high-earning freelancer’s bio? Have you noticed the way they organized their profile? Try checking and you can see how they carefully displayed their most important experiences and organized it in such a way that it’s easy to read everything at a glance.

Even if you’re just starting out as a freelancer, it’s still possible to be able to create a bio that would attract potential clients. Here are some important points to take note of to make your profile stand out.

Tip 1: Always check your spelling and grammar errors

This could be the easiest part and probably something that should be normally checked without thought. However, even some of the best freelancers get a few of these mistakes.

This should be taken of importance especially if you are trying to propose for a job that involves the need for in-depth knowledge of spelling and grammar, such as being a content writer.

If a potential client sees these errors, he may think that you are prone to making these mistakes at work, thus making him trust your output less if he ever hired you.

Make sure to not just double, but triple check your spelling and grammar mistakes in your bio.

Tip 2: Indicate an outline on what you excel at and add it on the topmost part of your profile

The main reason why a client would want to click on your profile is to check if you will be best suited for the project he’s working on. Never forget to indicate the skills you are good at in your bio.

In addition, you should also add software and/or technologies that you are knowledgeable in using. One example of which may be able to use Photoshop for picture editing.

Your profile only has limited space and clients do not have the time to check everything in your profile as they may also have a lot of other profiles to check on. Make sure to keep things short and precise, telling exactly what you can offer to the client.

You can also add it to the topmost part of your profile for easier reading.

Tip 3: Provide a summary of what you and your team is about

Some, if not most of the freelancing job sites nowadays, only give a limited amount of characters you can use to display whatever you can to attract clients into clicking your profile.

You can use a catchy yet brief statement indicating the most important information first to get their attention from just reading the first line.

Some examples would be:

We are an agile team passionate in building software. Tell us your business ideas and we’ll assist you in bringing it to reality.

A writer both in profession and nature, I’m one of the fortunate people who are able to work on something they’re passionate about. My writing has led me to places and had me meet some really awesome people. Let me know if you want to be one of them!

Tip 4: Appealing formatting

No matter how much experience you have, clients would less likely to be attracted to your bio if you squish every detail in it.

Your potential in getting hired gets narrower when they have difficulties in finding what they want to see.

You can follow these tips for creating an organized and appealing format for our bio:

  1. Divide the descriptions in your profile in sections. Some sections to add would be experiences, your skills, how to contact you, as well as software or programs you are capable of using.
  2. If you feel the need to add long statements, make sure to add spaces in between paragraphs so it would be easier to read. If possible, use bullets instead.
  3. If editable, use a font size and font style that can be easily read as well.

Yes, it may seem like a good idea to be creative or do something catchy to get a client’s attention. But we have to make sure that we give a positive impression too. Keep things professional to be able to gain the client’s trust that you take yourself and what you do seriously.

Tip 5: Indicate your  preferred working hours including your time zone

Being a freelancer gets you a chance to work with different people across the world. It sure is fun to be able to meet and work with different people of different cultures and personalities. However, there are also some things you should consider.

First off, are you willing and are free to work at any time of the day? If not, you should add your working hours on your profile. Let clients know what time is most convenient for you to work. If you choose to work on projects from a specific time zone, you can add those as well.

In addition, make sure to include your time zone as well. This will help the client in figuring out if both your schedules will work. This will also help him understand if you might not be able to reply right away.

Tip 6: Provide ways on how to contact you

You may have started your freelancing career by creating multiple accounts, thinking it’s an effective way of getting more clients. However, when we’re already working on a few projects, we may forget to check each and every one of it to see if a client may have tried to contact us through these freelance job platforms.

This is also an important part because, without it, we may miss great opportunities for our freelance career.

After indicating why they should hire you on your profile, add methods on how to directly reach you at the bottom. You can either indicate a link to your blog, your e-mail address or your phone number.

Similar to that of high-earning freelancers, it’s possible to gain clients that are great to work with and are generous in sharing what they have – may it be additional skills you can add to your portfolio or something of monetary value. By following the steps above, you’ll be able to attract the right clients for you and slowly be able to grab more projects with ease.
